Luis Alberto Avila
A native of Monclova, Mexico Drummer/Percussionist/Producer/Composer/Arranger/Lyricist/
Educator
A native of Monclova, Mexico. Luis began his musical journey at the age of two. His father was a touring musician and would carry him along to his performances. Luis always sat behind the drummer, allowing him the vantage point of middle stage. He began understanding how the rhythmic hypnosis brought together the ensemble and the crowd. The communal energy brought by this collaboration allowed Luis to admire and aspire to a career as a musician. At the tender age of five, he arrived at the United States with his family. Mr. Avila began studying music formally in sixth grade. At twelve years old, Luis began his professional career as a local musician, playing drum set and hand percussion in bars all around Dallas, Texas.
Meanwhile, he continued his educational career. After performing as a freelance musician for four years, he began preparing an audition to the prestigious Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. There, he began to see the world in a new light. Luis Avila was admitted into the music program as a percussionist for Classical, Jazz, Latin, R&B and African Dance Ensembles. Booker T. Washington was an immensely beneficial opportunity for him. While he was a student there, he was given access to master classes, tours, and accolades for his participation in the various ensembles. After graduating, Luis began taking private lessons with the University of North Texas’ current teacher at the time, Ed Soph. He also continued studying with various other teachers in the New York and Los Angeles area.
Presently, Mr. Avila manages his home studio, where he produces music for other artists and companies. Luis has been a freelance performer for the past twenty-one years and continues to play with the most popular bands in town. Furthermore, he teaches privately and directs his own fusion band. Luis currently resides in the Rockwall area with his wife, two daughters and his dogs, Chico, Yoli, and Coco.
